Department of Neuroscience

Francis W. (Bill) Flynn, Ph.D.

Director, Graduate Neuroscience Program

Personal Biography

I was born in East Meadow, Long Island NY.  I left the east to attend the University of Colorado, Boulder- to ski and major (ultimately) in psychology. During my undergraduate education my interests focused on brain function and behavior, and there were a number of courses in Biopsychology available at CU.  Courses in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology strengthened my overall biology background.

mottoAfter graduation I moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming ski. Undoubtedly one of the best ski areas in the world, and great access to Teton and Yellowstone Parks for summer trips. That was a great time with lasting memories and many close friendships were formed. A number of those friendships continue to today and we have annual reunions back in Jackson every February.

I lived and skied at Jackson for a number of years before entering graduate school. I completed my Ph.D. in Neuroscience in 1981 and then took a position at the University of Pennsylvania with Dr. Harvey Grill in the Institute of Neurological Sciences. While at Penn I had the good fortune to receive additional training from Drs. Stellar and Epstein.  My federal grant funding began at Penn and my research continues to be supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health.  My research has addressed the neural and neurohormonal regulation of blood pressure and fluid balance. I accepted a position at the University of Wyoming in 1986 where I am the Director of the Neuroscience Training and a Professor of Physiology.  I served as Director of the NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence in Neuroscience (2000-2011) and presently am the Director and the Principal Investigator on the NIH Neuroscience Center grant.

bikeOutdoor activities continue to be my passion and the area surrounding the University of Wyoming provides ample opportunity for skiing, fly fishing, and mountain biking. I've instilled an appreciation of the outdoors and activities in my wife and two children, and my son introduced me to the joys (and pains) of downhill mountain biking. ski Overall, I like gravity sports! When not in Laramie, we are at our retreat  in Steamboat Springs, CO., or traveling. Our favorite countries to visit are Australia and Italy.
