As defensive back and wide receiver for the Cowboys, Huey set 13 receiving records. A team co-captain, he played on three consecutive championship teams and is the only player in WAC history to receive offensive and defensive honors.

Gene Huey has been running backs coach for the Indianapolis Colts for more than 15 seasons. In that time he has guided star running backs such as Edgerrin James and Marshall Faulk to rushing titles, spots in the NFL record books, and several Pro Bowl berths. Huey had coached more games than any other position coach in Colts history when the team won the 2007 Super Bowl.

Before finding success as a coach in the NFL, Uniontown, Pennsylvania, native Huey was a star wide reciever and defensive back at the University of Wyoming. Playing from 1966 to 1968, Huey set 13 receiving records and was the only player in Western Athletic Conference history to be recognized for his offensive and defensive abilities. Huey was part of the 1966 Cowboy team that beat Florida State in the Sun Bowl.

Huey was drafted into the NFL by the St. Louis Cardinals and had NFL experience for two years before returning to UW to become head freshman coach in 1972. From there his coaching career led him to New Mexico as receivers coach, and then to Nebraska, Arizona State and Ohio State. He joined the Indianapolis Colts coaching staff in 1992.
