Research Interests

Andrew grew up in the western suburbs of Atlanta and received his bachelor's degree from Kennesaw State University in 2002. He moved to northern Mississippi and completed his Ph.D. from the University of Mississippi in 2007. His major area of specialization is American politics with minor areas of specialization in Comparative Politics and Research Methods. In 2005, Andrew also received a Clogg Scholarship to study advanced statistics at the ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Studies at the University of Michigan.

Andrew's teaching interests include American and Comparative political behavior - voting and elections, participation, public opinion and political parties - as well as democratization and regime change and research methodology. His research primarily focuses on how and to what extent the political environment (elites, media, candidates, etc.) affects the formation of the mass public's political attitudes. Examples of his research include a study of how the polarized political environment has created more uniform issue opinions among the mass public and another study demonstrating the limitations that interpersonal contact with gays and lesbians can have on changing attitudes about gay rights. Andrew's research has been published in Political Behavior, State Politics and Policy Quarterly and Politics and Policy. Currently his research includes a study of ideological polarization in the Wyoming legislature and another study that develops a way to measure the extent to which people are relying on their social and demographic groups (race, income, religion, etc.) or instead thinking independently or "outside the box" when forming their issue opinions.
