Dancing Their Way to the World Record

UW’s Cowboy Country Swing Club set the world record for largest swing dance and continues to grow with weekly dances.

By Micaela Myers

Wyoming may be the least-populated state, but the University of Wyoming’s Cowboy Country Swing Club had no problem breaking the Guinness world record for the world’s largest swing dance last spring. With more than 1,300 people in attendance—from ages 8 to 84—they shattered the previous world record of 756.

“It was elating to think that a club established only four years ago could grow so much that a world record could be broken,” says club president Hunter Perala, a senior kinesiology major from Cheyenne, Wyo.

The record-breaking event took place in UW’s War Memorial Fieldhouse and featured live music by Wyoming’s own Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers Band. Passionate and dedicated club members made the feat possible, but many of them are recent converts to swing dancing.

Cowboy Country Swing Club Hits World Record

“My involvement with swing club began the second semester of my freshmen year when I was dragged to swing club by my ear, literally,” Perala says. “After dancing in Nikes and shorts for three months, I developed a love for dancing and became more involved in the club.”

He encourages students to give it a try. “We meet on Thursday nights to have an absolutely amazing time, free of alcohol. Our weekly dances attract a consistent 200–250 members. We have around 400 members during scheduled live events and beginning-of-the-year dances.”

The club is a student-run organization, and the weekly dances usually take place in the Wyoming Union’s Yellowstone Ballroom.

“Location and club events are posted on the Cowboy Country Swing Club Facebook page, which currently has more than 1,000 members,” Perala says. “We provide free lessons from 8–9 p.m. and free open dancing from 9–11 p.m. Our events are a great way for people to socialize and have good, clean fun. When I’ve asked people why they like it so much, they respond with how they have met so many nice and energetic people at swing club and how these people have developed into some of their best friends.”

It’s that great group of friends—plus help from the community—that made the world record attempt such a success.

“It would not have been possible without the amazing support from students and faculty here at UW,” Perala says. “The people we have here are truly genuine, amazing and hard-working individuals.”
