You Don't Have to Live in Laramie to Get Your MSW Degree

Outreach Map

The Division of Social Work offers a hybrid Master of Social Work program to allow students to get their MSW degree without having to live in Laramie.  Here's how it works.

  1. The Division of Social Work utilizes the resources of the UW Outreach School, which operates Outreach Regional Centers throughout Wyoming.  Academic coordinators at each center provide academic advising and guidance for UW distance education programs. In addition, the Outreach Video Network, a videoconference system owned by the UW Outreach School, consists of over 40 sites in 20 communities across Wyoming. This allows students to attend weekday classes throughout the state as well as in person at the Laramie campus.

  2. There are five intensive weekends each semester that all students attend at the Laramie campus.  This gives all the students the opportunity to interact with their instructors and peers on a face-to-face basis, which facilitates a dynamic, interpersonal learning experience.

  3. Field practicums are available across the state which means that students that live outside the Laramie area can attend their field practicums closer to where they live.

Having the Best of Both Worlds

Megan O'Brien
"While being an outreach student in Jackson did mean a long drive every few weeks, it also allowed me to maintain my friendships and remain a part of a community that I love. If I got sick of reading, I could run down the street and hike up Snow King. When I finished a big paper, I could take my dog to swim in the Snake River or go skiing at the resort. I learned so much about my community in my 8 months at the Hirschfield Center than I would have ever learned in my other jobs in the area. I also made connections that will be immeasurably valuable when I finish my MSW and begin to look for a job. Grad school is tough no matter where you are, but it sure is nice to look up from my textbooks and see the Tetons every day." Megan O'Brien

Outreach School Makes Getting a MSW Degree Possible

Beth Evans
"I very much appreciate the freedom to attend class at night and safely within the area I live (Cheyenne) instead of having to drive to Laramie for class. As nearly half of the standard academic year in Wyoming involves winter and high wind conditions, the Outreach Program keeps us off rural and dangerous roads while getting necessary face-to-face instruction. Those traveling from the far reaches of Wyoming are likely much more appreciative. All in all, being an outreach student is really the only way I can be in this program and still maintain my family. All slight frustrations are worth the flexibility of being a non-traditional student not living in Laramie." Beth Evans
