Stage Combat Workshop

Department of Theatre and Dance

Come join us May 6th & 7th, 2017, for one or both days of intensive stage combat instruction in a variety of styles.

Classes will likely include:

  • Sneaky Ninja Tricks with Ninjutsu black-belt and SAFD Fight Director Tim Pinnow

  • Firearms

  • Found weapons

  • Knife fighting

  • Historically-influenced theatrical longsword with CT Kevin Inouye

                      ...and more!

Classes will be held all morning and afternoon. This is the only regular 2-day one in the Rocky Mountain Region (Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, Utah, Idaho), coming fully endorsed and sponsored by both the University of Wyoming's Department of Theatre & Dance and the Society of American Fight Directors, the oldest and largest (largest in the world!) domestic group dedicated to the study and performance of staged conflict.

This year's teaching staff is scheduled to include SAFD Fight Director Tim Pinnow, SAFD Certified Teacher Mike Speck, Specialist Sarah Shannon, and SAFD Certified Teacher Kevin Inouye.

The general schedule for both days is:

  • 9:00 a.m., check-in and announcements

  • 9:30 a.m., warm-up

  • 10:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.., classes

    • 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.., session 1

    • 1:00 p.m.. - 2:45 p.m., session 2

    • 3:00 p.m.. - 4:30 p.m.., session 3

Saturday evening we will have the opportunity to do a videotape Skills Proficiency Renewal if anyone wishes to do so.

Sunday we will have a Q&A with the instructors at 4:45 p.m..

Both workshops have benefited from grant money from the Wyoming Arts Council, which enables us to make them this cheap for you.

REGISTRATION is open to anyone 18 and older (younger may be considered with parental consent, but high school age is minimum).  The registration fee is as follows:

  • University of Wyoming Students are $20/day, $25 for both days

  • Non-UW students, $50 for one day or $75 for both days (this is the cheapest SAFD-sponsored regional workshop to attend in the nation!)

  • SAFD members in good standing can receive an additional 10% off

You will be required to sign a waiver and a model release before participating in any classes. Anyone under 18 will need a parent or guardian's signature on this.

All prop weaponry will be provided for the workshop, but please bring:

  • Water,

  • Snacks (to be eaten outside the theatre rooms), and

  • Clothes you can move in.

Gloves (typically unlined leather) are optional, but some people prefer to wear them for sword classes. Anyone wishing to bring their own props must have them approved by the workshop coordinator.

Those coming in from out of town can find local accommodations here.

Anyone wanting to renew their certifications, please should contact Kevin Inouye at to make those arrangements. Standard SAFD fees will apply to renewals.

If you have any questions, contact workshop coordinator Kevin Inouye at or 307-766-2433.
