Genocide Prevention Lecture Nov. 8

November 2, 2010 — Ellen Kennedy, founder and executive director of World Without Genocide, will speak Monday, Nov. 8, at 5 p.m. in Room 222 of the University of Wyoming Classroom Building.

The University of Wyoming International Studies Program will host the lecture, "Never Again Must Mean "Never" - Genocide Prevention and Action." This event is free and open to the public.

"After the Holocaust, the world said, ‘Never again'. Never ever again would leaders sit by while millions of innocent people are killed," Kennedy says. "But those words have become ‘over and over again,' as genocides happened in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and now the first genocide of the 21st century in the Darfur region of Sudan.

Kennedy will discuss these global tragedies, the policies and response of governments and how ordinary people can take a stand to make "never again" mean "never."

Kennedy's lecture is part of a statewide International Studies Scholar Lecture Series funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant to UW International Studies Program in partnership with the Wyoming community colleges. All seven of Wyoming's community colleges are participating in the grant.

"The three-year grant, now in its second year, has built a consortium among Wyoming colleges to share a statewide speaker series focusing on a variety of global issues" says Jean Garrison, director of UW International Studies. "We also are working to enhance the international studies course offerings at the colleges, and to build new or expand upon existing international studies programs."

The lecture is also sponsored by the Wyoming Humanities Council.
