UW Students Create Computer Model to Determine Surface Shade and Measure Snowmelt in Colorado River Basin

December 12, 2013 — In an attempt to measure snowmelt in a mountainous region northwest of Boulder, Colo., two University of Wyoming students are determining surface shade through a computer model they’ve created. They hope their high-performance computing research eventually can be scaled up for use on Mount Moran, UW’s high-performance computing cluster, and be a useful tool for modeling solar radiation for the entire Upper Colorado River Basin.

On-the-Job Injury Motivates Duff’s Law Career

December 11, 2013 — Like he had done hundreds of times before, 22-year-old air freight worker Michael Duff bent down to lift a small package that appeared to weigh only a couple of pounds. Instead, it contained a rare, high density element that weighed more than 100 pounds. He heard a loud “pop” in his back, and Duff fell to the ground in pain with a spinal injury that still bothers him more than 30 years later.

UW Drivers and Officers Transport Many Students During Cold Snap

November 20, 2013 — The celebration of Thanksgiving as a national holiday in late November was not enacted until the 1870s. The official reason was to commemorate the landing at Plymouth of the nation’s Puritan forefathers and foremothers. The holiday’s national designation stemmed from two forces. The first was the unceasing will of author Sarah Josepha Hale, who spent 40 years of her adult life campaigning for the declaration of Thanksgiving as a national holiday.

Wyoming Students Benefit from Rocky Mountain Power Foundation Grant

November 19, 2013 — The Rocky Mountain Power Foundation awarded $35,000 to the University of Wyoming Foundation during the past fiscal year for education and research programs, and for scholarships for entering freshmen from Wyoming communities. To date, Rocky Mountain Power and the Rocky Mountain Power Foundation have gifted a total of $769,386 to UW.

New UW Employee Assistance Program Begins Dec. 1

November 18, 2013 — The University of Wyoming will offer an employee assistance program (EAP) that provides benefited employees and their household members with professional counseling, legal and financial assistance beginning Dec. 1.

University Vehicle Regulation Requires Annual Motor Vehicle Records Check

November 18, 2013 — Individuals who know they will drive on University of Wyoming business during 2014 need to make a new request by Dec. 1, 2013.
