January 3, 2013 — The University of Wyoming Department of Theatre and Dance will present the ballet “From the Ashes: A Cinderella Ballet” this month in Gillette and Torrington; Rapid City, S.D.; Scottsbluff, Neb.; and Fort Morgan, Colo.
Presented by UW Fine Arts Outreach, all performances are free and open to the public. Performances begin at 7 p.m. in Gillette, Rapid City, Torrington and Fort Morgan, and 7:30 p.m. in Scottsbluff.
“This
Cinderella is defiant and independent,” says choreographer and director
Jennifer Deckert, UW professor of dance. “I wanted to redefine what a confident
young woman is. She does not need to be demure or restricted to a certain mode
of being.”
The ballet follows a young woman who discerns her true desires in life against
a backdrop of societal expectations. Cinderella struggles against her jealous
stepmother, spiteful stepsisters and idealized notions of love.
Performances will feature UW students that hail from the tour locations, including Lindsey Carter of Gillette; Brianna Boyle of Rapid City; Darci Deaver, Samantha Kraft and Niki Kraft of Scottsbluff; and Taylor Kath of Torrington.
The schedule:
Jan. 16, Gillette -- Campbell County High School, North Campus Auditorium; partner: Sheridan College.
Jan. 17, Rapid City -- Performing Arts Center.
Jan. 18, Scottsbluff -- Midwest Theater; partner: Midwest Theater, Billy Estes, general manager.
Jan. 19, Torrington -- Eastern Wyoming College Auditorium; partner: 28th Avenue Dance and KGOS/KERM.
Jan. 20, Fort Morgan -- Glenn Miller Auditorium, Fort Morgan High School; partner: Morgan Community College Center for Arts and Community Enrichment.
