A faculty showcase recital continues the University of Wyoming Department of Music fall Faculty Recital Series Sunday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for Performing Arts concert hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Performances will include pieces chosen by the head of choirs and soprano Nicole Lamartine, percussionist Steve Barnhart, and faculty ensemble “Lights Along the Shore,” a group led by ethnomusicologist and flutist Rod Garnett. “Lights Along the Shore” includes Garnett on Moldovan nai (panpipes) and other ethnic flutes; Blake McGee on clarinet; and community member Lisa Rickard on piano. The ensemble released its first CD last spring.
Faculty jazz duo Scott Turpen and Ben Markley will perform original works composed by Markley.
New harp faculty member Hillary Schefter will premiere her solo-harp composition, written in homage to Bernard Andres.
"The idea originated because there is a set of two short series of works for solo harp called ‘Spices’ by a living harp composer named Bernard Andres,” Schefter says. “He is known for his evocative and unique presentation of sounds and colors, and each short piece is supposed to evoke the color and taste of a different spice. I am using that as inspiration for my own series based on cocktails."
The east parking lot, as well as the east entrance to what was formerly known as the Fine Arts Building, is closed. Patrons may enter from the west -- off Fraternity Row or Willett Drive -- and park on the west, north or south side of the building. The concert hall will remain open and accessible during the construction project.
