Sept. 23 Event Promotes Biking to UW

September 16, 2014

The first-ever Bike to UW Day will take place Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 7 a.m.–noon at the University of Wyoming Simpson Plaza. The free event encourages individuals who commute to UW regularly to do so by bicycle.

A variety of organizations will be on hand to support riders with free food, water bottles and other services while supplies last.

Dan McCoy, assistant director of Campus Recreation and chair of the Bicycle Pedestrian Safety Committee, says the event is being offered to promote and encourage bicycle commuting as a safe, fun and inexpensive alternative to driving.

The committee also wants to promote a few initiatives that support cycling on campus, such as registering bikes with the UW Police Department, and a website that serves as a one-stop shop for bike-related resources for campus: www.uwyo.edu/bike.

Additionally, the committee will launch the new updated bike map for campus and surrounding areas to help commuters navigate to work or school.

Those who show up on bicycles at Simpson Plaza will receive:

-- Free breakfast burritos for the first 250 riders;

-- Free basic tune-ups and bike evaluations provided by the Pedal House;

-- Free bike lights to those who register their bikes (while supplies last), provided by the UW Police Department;

-- Free bike maps and water bottles;

-- Free information provided by local bike organizations and more.

Bike to UW Day is sponsored by the UW Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Committee, Auxiliary Services, Pedal House, UWPD, UW Recycling and the Outdoor Program.
