A Wyoming neurologist will discuss his experiences with ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease) patients during a seminar Thursday, Nov. 6, at 4 p.m. in the University of Wyoming Berry Center auditorium.

David Wheeler, a neurologist with Wyoming Neurological Associates in Casper, will speak in an ALS seminar series organized by UW’s CHAP (Community Health Advancement Program). Members organized the series in response to the popularity of the ALS ice bucket challenge. The goal is to help students and others interested in the topic gain a better understanding of what the disease is about and its effects on patients and their loved ones.

Wheeler has extensive experience in neurology and epilepsy and in inpatient stroke care. He established the Wyoming Epilepsy Center that provides comprehensive care to thousands of Wyomingites affected by seizures. He also led the development of a nationally recognized primary stroke center.

The seminar series continues Thursday, Nov. 13, with Laramie clinical psychologist Martha Schilling; and the final session is Nov. 19, with Susan Schrag from the  Rocky Mountain ALS Association and UW’s Collette Kuhfus (family member of an ALS patient). For session details, visit www.uwyo.edu/ahec/chap/a.l.sseminar2014.html.

CHAP encourages students interested in health care professions by coordinating student volunteers to get involved in community volunteering and activism projects. CHAP also hosts seminars and video series on different topics relating to health care.
