Cornell University Professor Nelson Hairston Jr. will speak Thursday and Friday, Oct. 9-10, at the University of Wyoming.

A Cornell University professor who’s an expert on evolutionary processes will deliver the 31st annual L. Floyd Clarke Memorial Lecture in the University of Wyoming’s Department of Zoology and Physiology Thursday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. in Room 138 of the Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center.

Nelson Hairston Jr. will speak on “Taking it easy in the fast lane: Prolonged dormancy meets rapid evolution in the plankton,” addressing his research on freshwater organisms in habitats such as lakes, ponds and streams where ecological and evolutionary interactions are intense.

Hairston also will present a departmental seminar, “Eco-Evolutionary Dynamics in Models, Bottles and Nature,” Friday, Oct.10, at noon in Room 138 of the Berry Center.

Thursday’s lecture is sponsored by the L. Floyd Clarke Fund in the Department of Zoology and Physiology. Clarke began working at UW in 1935, served as department head from 1942-68, and also served as associate dean of the College of Health Sciences. He died in 1981.

The L. Floyd Clarke Fund benefits UW students and faculty members through lectures, visiting professorships, graduate student stipends and awards for outstanding undergraduates and faculty.

UW’s Biodiversity Institute co-sponsors Hairston’s UW appearance.
