Artist Hannah Hughes presents an original exhibition, “Slices,” on display through Thursday, Feb. 19, in Gallery 234, located in the lower level of the University of Wyoming Union.

Hughes is a recent transfer student from Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs. “Slices” will continue a theme Hughes has been exploring since her time in college. She works primarily in experimental printmaking. Printmaking, a traditional medium using a printing press and ink, can have limitless variables, she says.

Hughes explores collographs, a process in which a 3-D etching plate embosses the paper while printing, with abstract images of oranges and textural designs. Other printmaking techniques used in Hughes’ work include dry point, intagalio and chine colle.

“I use oranges for imagery in much of my work to represent the organic properties that all life has,” Hughes says. “The different effects I apply to my prints give attributes that are similar to decay, reaching toward the idea that everything exists only for a limited amount of time.”

A reception for Hughes is scheduled Monday, Feb. 16, from 5-7 p.m. in Gallery 234. Refreshments will be provided. The exhibition is sponsored by UW Visual and Cultural Arts.
