More than 600 junior and senior high students will be on the University of Wyoming campus Thursday, March 26, and Friday, March 27, to participate in the 2015 UW Jazz Festival. Students will receive instruction at the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts.

The UW Department of Music Jazz Studies sponsors the event that brings together students to perform and participate in clinics led by renowned jazz educators. Concerts featuring UW student groups, UW jazz faculty members and world-class guest artists highlight the festival.

Two of the jazz festival’s artists and guest clinicians also will perform Thursday and Saturday evenings as part of UW’s Cultural Programs Series. Jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton, a six-time Grammy nominee, will perform Thursday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts concert hall. Lonnie Smith, a jazz organist, will perform Saturday, March 28, in the Performing Arts concert hall, also at man wearing tuban and sitting at keyboard7:30 p.m.

Tickets for each concert cost $23 for the public, $19 for senior citizens and $10 for students. For tickets and information, call (307) 766-6666, visit www.uwyo.edu/finearts, the Wyoming Union information desk or the Performing Arts box office.

High school jazz students will receive instruction throughout the two-day festival. Thursday’s schedule features, at 7:30 p.m., UW's premiere Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ben Markley, jazz festival director and UW Department of Music visiting professor, followed by Sutton’s performance.

A combined concert Friday will feature UW faculty members and Smith at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts concert hall.

The Scott Turpen Quintet will perform music from its newly released CD "Dance of the West." Turpen is a UW Department of Music professor of jazz studies. The CD features new compositions by pianist Markley and Turpen, a saxophonist.

Smith, a jazz icon and organ guru, will be joined on stage by the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble for an evening of organ music with a big band sound.
