The final concert of the University of Wyoming Department of Music’s spring Faculty Recital Series will feature guest fortepianist David Kim Sunday, April 26, at 3 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Cathedral, 104 S. Fourth St. in Laramie. Kim’s performance is free and open to the public.

Kim will perform music by Schumann and Beethoven on a 19th century Viennese fortepiano.

The fortepiano is the early version of the piano, invented by the Italian instrument maker Bartolomeo Cristofori around 1700. It was the instrument for which Haydn, Mozart and the early Beethoven wrote their music. Starting in Beethoven's time, the fortepiano began a period of steady development, culminating in the late 19th century with what is now recognized as a modern grand piano.

Famed American pianist Malcolm Bilson calls Kim “a musician who will doubtless make an important contribution to the musical life of this country.” Kim holds degrees from Harvard, Yale and Cornell universities, and a doctorate from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

He has performed internationally, with past appearances throughout the United States, Canada, Austria, Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom, South Korea and Australia. His concerts have been praised as “emotionally expansive” and “idiomatically perfect.” Kim is a professor of theory and piano at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash.
