In Wyoming and across the nation, attention is focusing more and more on the role of science and technology in education and the economy.

Norman R. Augustine, retired chairman and chief executive officer of Lockheed Martin Corp., will share his perspective on “Can America Compete?” at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, at the University of Wyoming’s Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center. The speech is part of the UW School of Energy Resources’ Distinguished Speaker Series.

In addition to his time at the nation’s largest defense contractor, Augustine also is a former undersecretary of the U.S. Army. Often compared to Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and former Intel CEO Craig Barrett for his national leadership in technology, Augustine is a longtime proponent for securing the place of science and engineering on the list of the nation’s priorities.

In addition to a professional career that includes serving in top positions at the American Red Cross, the Association of the United States Army and the National Academy of Engineering, Augustine’s honors include the National Medal of Technology and the U.S. Department of Defense’s highest civilian award, the Distinguished Service Medal, given to him five times.

Each year, the School of Energy Resources hosts top industry and academic professionals from around the world to share their knowledge and experience in the energy world. The events bring together students, faculty, researchers and the public to learn about a wide range of advanced energy technologies and industry trends.
