The University of Wyoming choirs will perform a final concert of the season Thursday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall. The performance is free and open to the public.
The Collegiate Chorale, Happy Jacks, Bel Canto Women’s Choir and the UW Singing Statesmen will perform.
The Collegiate Chorale, conducted by Nicole Lamartine, will present a set of African-American spirituals arranged for choir by William Dawson and Moses Hogan. The pieces display the wide array of emotion found in the music born out of slavery in 19th century America, says Lamartine, director of choral activities at UW.
Bel Canto Women’s Choir, conducted by Assistant Professor Holly Dalrymple, will present a varied program, ranging from “Reel a Bouche,” a French Canadian lilting song accompanied by hammered dulcimer, to “Kasar mie la gaji” by Venezuelan composer Alberto Grau. The song brings attention to the problems of the environment, Lamartine says.
Lamartine directs the UW Singing Statesmen. The group’s performance will be highlighted by student composer Nick Anderson with a performance of his “Lowlands Away,” a take on a sea chantey. They will pair that with a traditional sea chantey “Bound to the Wave.” The Statesmen also will join Bel Canto to perform a traditional American folk song “Shenandoah.”
Select members of the Statesmen, who make up the male a cappella group Happy Jacks, will perform arrangements of two contemporary pop songs.
UW graduating seniors will be recognized during the final concert. Bel Canto will sing an Irish blessing to senior choir members. The UW Singing Statesmen will recognize their graduates with a new arrangement “The Parting Glass.”
