Events Scheduled for National Nutrition Month at UW

March 6, 2017

Three events for the University of Wyoming campus community are scheduled during National Nutrition Month.

Initiated in March 1973 as a weeklong event, National Nutrition Week became a monthlong observance in 1980 in response to growing public interest in nutrition. “Put Your Best Fork Forward” is the theme for this year’s observance, which serves as a “reminder that each one of us holds the tool to make healthier food choices,” according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

According to the association, making small changes during National Nutrition Month and over time helps improve health now and in the future.

Jill Fabricius Keith, UW Department of Family and Consumer Sciences assistant professor, says, since 2008, March has included an “RDN Day,” which celebrates registered dietitian nutritionists (RDN) nationwide. UW offers an accredited didactic program in nutrition and dietetics to prepare future RDNs for work in nutrition and wellness.

As the nation’s food and nutrition experts, RDNs are committed to improving the health of their patients and community, Fabricius Keith says.

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics:

-- RDNs are the food and nutrition experts who can translate the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living.

-- RDNs have degrees in nutrition, dietetics, public health or a related field from well-respected, accredited colleges and universities, completed an internship and passed an examination.

-- RDNs use their nutrition expertise to help individuals make positive lifestyle changes.

-- RDNs work throughout the community in hospitals, schools, public health clinics, nursing homes, fitness centers, food management, food industry, universities, research and private practice.

-- RDNs are advocates for advancing the nutritional status of Americans and people around the world.

Events scheduled on the UW campus to celebrate National Nutrition Month are:

-- Wednesday, March 8, “Ask the RDN,” Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center lobby, from 3:30-5:30 p.m.

-- Wednesday, March 22, “Healthy Weight Loss,” Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center classroom, Room 115, from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

-- Wednesday, March 29, “Sports Nutrition,” Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center classroom, Room 115, from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
