Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, a top American dance company, will perform as the first spring semester act for University of Wyoming Presents. The program is Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 7:30 p.m. on the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts main stage.

Tickets cost $20 for the public; $17 for faculty, staff and senior citizens; and $10 for students. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

Founded in 1983, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is one of America’s most prominent, culturally specific dance companies, serving more than 45,000 people nationwide each year, according to the production company’s website. The company has performed at 73 venues in 27 states, including leading theaters, universities and underserved communities.

Flamenco has its roots in Indian, Arabic and Spanish culture, and the dance is characterized by sweeping arm, hand and body movements, and rhythmic stomping and hand clapping, all based on the song being played. A singer and guitar player generally accompany the dancer.

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana’s art education school serves disadvantaged youth and economically challenged communities in New York City. The company opened the Center for Flamenco Arts in New York City in 2009. It also helped open the first flamenco museum exhibition in the United States in 2014.

Each year, UW Presents brings a variety of internationally known performers to campus, often at ticket prices much less than at larger venues. This season features five performances during the spring semester.

The four remaining performances in the spring are: the Danish String Quartet, Thursday, Feb. 21; the Jeff Hamilton Trio, Thursday, March 14; the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, Tuesday, April 9; and Daniel Hsu, Friday, May 3.
