UWs Student Center for Public Trust Chapter Awards Money to Local Nonprofits

For the second year, the University of Wyoming’s Student Center for the Public Trust (SCPT) chapter awarded resources to Laramie nonprofit organizations.

Nonprofits receiving cash awards were Cathedral Home for Children; The Clothing Cottage; Downtown Clinic; Interfaith-Good Samaritan; and Snowy Range Academy.

SCPT members researched, met with and toured each organization. Members then helped put presentations together for each organization to demonstrate how the cash awards would help each group.

“We had five organizations present to our chapter members,” says Kent Noble, the Bill Daniels Chair of Business Ethics in the UW College of Business. “Each organization worked with one of our club’s executive team members.”

Cathedral Home for Children worked with Michael Blaney, a second bachelor’s degree in marketing major from Cheyenne; Snowy Range Academy worked with Samantha Daniels, a senior in marketing from Aurora, Colo.; The Clothing Cottage worked with Sarah Devine, a senior in marketing from Loveland, Colo.; Downtown Clinic worked with Ryne Grossnickle, a senior in marketing from Rock Springs; and Interfaith-Good Samaritan worked with Rose Johnson, a senior in marketing from Laramie.

After the presentations April 29, a total of $12,500 was awarded to the organizations.

“The $12,500 we awarded was generously donated from the John P. Ellbogen Foundation and the Scarlett Family Foundation,” Noble says. “Most of the funds -- $11,000 -- came from the John P. Ellbogen Foundation.”

Interfaith-Good Samaritan was awarded $9,000; the Downtown Clinic was awarded $2,000; and Cathedral Home for Children, The Clothing Cottage and Snowy Range Academy each received $500.

The project was spearheaded by Johnson, one of SCPT’s executive team members.

“The research and presentations helped students in the chapter learn, that as ethical business leaders, they have the ability and responsibility to make a difference in their communities,” Noble says.

SCPT’s executive team also served as the jury for finalists from the recent John P. Ellbogen $50K Entrepreneurship Competition that submitted plans for developing an ethical culture within their respective organizations. The winner, Torch Creamery, received $2,500 from the Daniels Fund Endowment.

The SCPT is a UW recognized student organization (RSO) that serves as a student-run ethics club, Noble says.
