The University of Wyoming Percussion Ensemble, along with percussionists from Laramie High School, will present “Crossroads: The Music of Ivan Trevino” Monday, Nov. 4.

Directed by UW Department of Music Assistant Professor Andrew Wheelock, the concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall. It is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature special guest Ivan Trevino, a Mexican American composer, percussionist and educator who has become a recognizable voice in the percussion community.

Trevino’s blend of contemporary, percussive and indie-rock compositions has become standard repertoire in the field of percussion and is regularly performed around the world. He is a multi-award-winning recipient of the Percussive Arts Society’s International Composition Contest, and he has over 70 compositions and songs to his name.

He is a founding member, drummer and composer with Break of Reality, an international touring cello and percussion quartet. In 2017, he co-founded The Big Trouble, a percussion/songwriting collective.

Additionally, he is an active educator who has presented clinics at hundreds of institutions. He also has designed and taught courses at Eastman School of Music and served as a faculty member in the School of Music at Baylor University.

Trevino’s work spans various media, including storytelling, poetry and film scoring. He recently wrote “Space Junk,” a children’s story accompanied by music. “My Pretend Music School,” a blog post that sparked debate about music school curriculum, has become required reading for collegiate courses around the U.S.
