Eight Receive UW Own It! Awards for Women in Science

Eight University of Wyoming employees and students are the recipients of the fifth annual Own It! Awards that recognize women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The Own It! Awards honor “the outstanding women on campus and around Wyoming who are doing amazing work in STEM,” says Lisa Abeyta, UW coordinator of Student Research Programs. The program is located with Wyoming NSF EPSCoR (National Science Foundation Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research). Wyoming EPSCoR and its partners develop award nomination criteria.

Because of COVID-19 concerns, this year’s celebration to honor the recipients was canceled, but the complete list of winners and comments on each individual is listed here.

Winners are:

-- Undergraduate student: Aisha Balogun Mohammed, a computer engineering senior, from Ilorin, Nigeria.

-- Graduate student: Rhiannon Jakopak, a master’s degree student in zoology, and environment and natural resources, from Scotland, S.D.

-- STEM professional: Jane Crayton, Coe Library makerspace coordinator.

-- Pre-tenured faculty: Karen Mruk, School of Pharmacy assistant professor.

-- Tenured faculty: Jennifer Tanner Eisenhauer, Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering associate professor.

-- Antell Diversity Award: Bethann Garramon Merkle, associate research scientist with the Wyoming Migration Initiative.

-- Committee choice: Jessica Sutter, a graduate student from Portland, Ore., and Rachel Watson, chemistry senior lecturer.

Other sponsors of the Own It! program are the Wyoming IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) program; the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium; the College of Engineering and Applied Science; Women in Math, Science and Engineering (WiMSE); and the Learning Actively Mentoring Program (LAMP).
