Guest Pianists to Perform at UW Feb. 22

Shuang “Iris” Zhang and Adam ZukiewiczThe University of Wyoming Department of Music will host guest pianists Adam Zukiewicz and Shuang “Iris” Zhang Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Zukiewicz and Zhang will present “Chopin Unknown” at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. The concert is free and open to the public. It also will be livestreamed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsU-pfeV-d4.

This research performance project focuses on the study works of Chopin -- “Three Learned Fugues after Cherubini” -- first published in 2017 by Jean-Jacques Eigeldinger.

After Chopin’s exploration of counterpoint, as exemplified by these study works, his music became more intricate texturally and structurally, culminating in some of his most sophisticated, complex and popular works. “Three Learned Fugues after Cherubini” served as a model for Chopin’s compositional development.

Zukiewicz and Zhang will perform Fugue in A minor, B. 144; “Three Learned Fugues after Cherubini”; Three Mazurkas, Op. 59; Barcarolle in F-sharp major, Op. 60; Ballade in F minor, Op. 52; and Piano Sonata in B minor, Op. 58.

The duo will perform the same program at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall Saturday, Feb. 25.

Zukiewicz is an award-winning, internationally acclaimed concert pianist and chamber musician. He has performed in Brazil, Canada, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau and throughout the U.S. His innovative programming -- focused on exploring connections between the popular and the lesser-known gems of the traditional and contemporary repertoire -- continues to engage and inspire audiences around the world.

Zukiewicz has a long-standing interest in the music of Chopin. In 2021, he received a grant to complete the “Chopin Unknown” recording research project.

He is an associate professor of piano at the University of Northern Colorado. He also serves as a resident faculty pianist at the International Music Festival of the Adriatic in Duino, Italy. He is the founder and artistic director of the Intercollegiate Piano Competition of the West and Beethoven in the Rockies: Concert Series. Additionally, he is a frequent adjudicator of piano competitions, and he has been an adjudicator of the Steinway Piano Competition since 2018.

As a solo pianist, Zhang has won the Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Solo Piano Competition of the West Central Division; the International Keyboard Odyssiad® & Festival Concerto Division; the Angie Southard Solo Competition; and the University of Northern Colorado Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition.

Zhang formerly served as an adjunct faculty member at Laramie County Community College and as keyboardist for the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra. Besides teaching area students and leading master classes in person, she has devoted herself to remote private teaching since 2017, with students in the U.S., the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia and various cities across China.

She is the founder and manager of Enterprise for Performing and Inspirational Career in China, a music business organization devoted to creating and bridging domestic musical talents and global resources. She also is the international director and competition co-director of the International Keyboard Odyssiad® & Festival, and she serves as the marketing and media director of Beethoven in the Rockies: Concert Series.
