Event to Support Suicide Prevention April 15 at UW

graphic for eventThe University of Wyoming joins thousands of people across the country this spring in support of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. The event is the fifth annual Out of the Darkness Campus Walk Saturday, April 15.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. at the UW College of Education gymnasium, with the opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m.

The planned route starts near the College of Education Building on Prexy’s Pasture and follows University Avenue to Third Street before following Grand Avenue back to campus. The route is about two miles, and it’s anticipated that it will take participants 30-40 minutes to complete.

The need to support suicide prevention remains more urgent than ever, organizers say. The rural nature of Wyoming, stigma associated with getting mental health support and harsh environment have caused the state to have the highest per-capita number of suicides in the nation. Suicide is the seventh leading cause of death in Wyoming and is the second leading cause of death between the ages of 10-44.

“The Campus Walk brings members of our community together to support those impacted by suicide while raising awareness and providing funding for life-saving suicide prevention programs and research,” says Margaret Hudson, an assistant professor in the College of Education and the organizer of the walk.

Out of the Darkness Campus Walks are the AFSP’s signature fundraising series, designed to engage youth and young adults in the fight to prevent suicide. Participants can support the organization’s goals by registering to walk and collecting donations from friends and family. They can join the College of Education team or start their own.

People can register to walk at https://supporting.afsp.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=register.start&eventID=9216, and they can donate at https://supporting.afsp.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.event&eventID=9216.
