UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

The Laramie Boomerang featured the monthlong Matthew Shepard 20th Memorial with a series of events, including a performance of “Considering Matthew Shepard” by the Grammy Award-winning choral group Conspirare. The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) published two similar articles.

Shepard’s murder still resonates today, according to a USA Today feature. Several UW personnel reflected on Shepard’s death in Boomerang and Wyoming Public Radio features. Denver’s 9News also featured the Conspirare concert in Fort Collins, Colo.

The CS-T interviewed UW law Professor Stephen Feldman on the appointment of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court and the level of influence sparsely populated, largely conservative states have in appointing those judges.

Among UW releases published on Sheridan Media’s website were: four UW alumni being honored during Homecoming; David Bernhardt, deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior, being the keynote speaker for the Landscape Discussion on Energy Law and Policy in the Rockies at UW; annual Homecoming events; and UW research scientist Bethann Garramon Merkle and her colleagues publishing a paper on how poetry can help promote science.

Dallas Innovates reported that a north Texas team won the WyoHackathon competition, a blockchain hackathon, at UW last month.

The UW Police Department will plan events later this fall as part of the national “Coffee with a Cop” program, reported The Boomerang.

Wyo4News published UW’s release noting that UW accounting students will participate in an interactive program focusing on IRS criminal investigations. They will participate in the Adrian Project developed by the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS.

Laramie Mayor Andi Summerville highlighted UW’s annual Big Event -- a day of service by UW students in the community -- during her monthly radio interview with Laramie Live.

UW Manufacturing Works Project Manager Gustave Anderson was interviewed by The Boomerang for national Manufacturing Day events last week.

The Jackson Hole News and Guide gave “Locust: The Opera” a favorable review. Created by UW faculty members Jeff Lockwood and Anne Guzzo, the original stage piece premiered recently in Jackson. A similar article was published by Atlas Obscura.

Zach Wallace, a Wyoming Natural Diversity Database research scientist at UW, discussed golden eagle conservation last week at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, according to The Billings Gazette.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed UW Associate Professor Lilia Soto about her new book, “Girlhood in the Borderlands,” which takes a deep look at the lives of teenage girls who grow up living between Mexico and the United States.

Susan Dewey, a UW associate professor in the School of Culture, Gender and Social Justice, said there are significant differences in what lead men and women to prison, according to NTV ABC, of Axtell, Neb. Dewey was the keynote speaker at the 30th annual University of Nebraska-Kearney Criminal Justice Conference.

Utah Public Radio interviewed Erick Robinson, a UW postdoctoral anthropology researcher, who is part of a team studying prehistoric waste to compare societal growth and decline.

UW Professor William Missouri Downs’ latest play, “Below the Navel Above the Knees,” was featured in The Boomerang.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle profiled comedian Ken Jeong, who brought his brand of stand-up comedy to the UW campus last weekend.
