UW in the News

October 12, 2020

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Forbes featured Costa Rican native Jimena Golcher-Benavides, a UW ecology doctoral candidate. She scuba dives in Lake Tanganyika, the world’s deepest tropical freshwater lake, to study cichlids, an important fish species for small-scale fisheries, aquaculture and in the global aquarium trade.

UW has received an $8 million grant from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to establish a network of stations to monitor snowpack and soil moisture in the Upper Missouri River Basin. The U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, chaired by U.S. Sen. John Barrasso, issued the official announcement. Oil City News published UW’s release on the announcement.

The Dallas Business Journal interviewed UW law Professor Michael Duff on Southwest Airlines asking employees to take pay cuts. Duff said unions might agree to concessions when taking the risk of possible 2021 furloughs into account.

Duff also was interviewed by the Daily Labor Report on the National Labor Relations Board halting more mail-in union elections than it is allowed in recent months despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Wyoming Public Media (WPM) noted that UW Professor Ken Sims and his team are trying to find out what goes on beneath the surface of Yellowstone National Park. WPM also interviewed Sims about the activity of the park’s geysers.

UW and Central Wyoming College have been awarded a grant for nearly $578,000 to recruit more Wind River Indian Reservation students into the two schools’ food, agriculture, natural resources and human sciences programs. Wyoming News Now and Sheridan Media published UW’s release on the four-year project.

Wyo4News and Sheridan Media published UW’s release announcing UW Answers, a new program to assist college-seeking students and their families.

IMPACT 307, Sheridan’s business incubator, announced five finalists for the 2020 Sheridan Start-Up Challenge entrepreneur competition. Sheridan Media published UW’s release that also notes that UW’s Office of Research and Economic Development oversees IMPACT 307.

The Powell Tribune published UW’s release noting that the fall issue of UWyo Magazine features a first-ever eat and drink theme, celebrating UW’s alumni chefs, winemakers and brewers.

UW Nordic ski club Coaches Christi Boggs and Rachel Watson discussed with The Casper Star-Tribune how their student-athletes are training outdoors despite the heavy smoke from the Mullen fire in the Snowy Range.

UW’s Esports Club is virtually hosting its biannual local area network gaming tournament Saturday, Oct. 24. Oil City News and eSports for Us published UW’s release on the announcement.
