UW in the News

October 26, 2020

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) reported that UW is taking steps -- with the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic -- to continue delivering as much of an on-campus experience as possible in the spring 2021 semester. Wyo4News and SweetwaterNOW both published UW’s release.

UW and the state’s seven community colleges recently announced plans for a universal 2-plus-2 partnership. The UW agreements with the colleges will outline the transfer assurances for all students. The CS-T  reported that the combined credits will allow students to earn bachelor’s degrees from the university. Sheridan Media and WyoToday published UW’s announcement on the agreements.

Science Magazine featured UW zoology and physiology Professor Merav Ben-David, who is running for the U.S. Senate against Cynthia Lummis.

Dulcinea Groff, a UW postdoctoral research associate, led a study of a seabird ecosystem shift in the Falkland Islands, according to a UW release. Cosmos and UPI published similar articles on Groff’s research, which first appeared in Science Advances.

Wyoming Public Radio (WPR) noted that a UW study found that exposing wildland firefighters to heat might help them avoid heat-related illnesses. The study involved firefighters walking on a treadmill in a 104-degree room.

A new solar energy facility in Laramie is being proposed, according to The Laramie Boomerang. Some of the facility’s use will be donated to UW faculty for research and hands-on classwork. The CS-T published a similar article.

The Exponent published an article that quoted UW economist Rob Godby. The original article, titled “Major Wyoming coal company suffers huge losses, plans to divest from thermal coal,” appeared in The CS-T.

WPR featured UW Assistant Professor Fredrick Douglass Dixon, who is the director of the university’s new Black Studies Center, which opened this semester. The Boomerang published a similar article.

McKensie Harris, an assistant lecturer and internship program coordinator for the UW Department of Animal Science, is teaching a livestock slaughter practicum class in the UW Meat Laboratory this fall. Wyoming News Now and Sheridan Media were among media outlets publishing UW’s release.

The Rawlins Times published UW’s release noting that Associate Professor Haibo Zhai received federal grants to research carbon capture and storage, and water savings at natural gas-fired power plants.

UW Assistant Professor Pejman Tahmasebi received the Arie van Weelden Award presented to a member of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers. The Rocket Miner published UW’s release.

Hits 106 published UW’s release announcing that Jill Aldridge, contracts manager for Residence Life and Dining Services, was named Staff Employee of the Third Quarter.

UW’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is offering a virtual town-hall meeting, titled “Black Fatigue and Being Committed Allies for Systemic Change.” Cap City News published UW’s announcement.

Sheridan Media reported that UW scientists will use an $800,000 grant from the Wyoming Department of Public Health to test effluent from Wyoming communities for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
