UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Guardian cited a UW study for an article, titled “Fear that Johnson & Johnson pause could heighten vaccine hesitancy in U.S.” The study by UW economists found that, in Wyoming, a distrust of the Biden administration and the Food and Drug Administration were major reasons people cited for waiting to be vaccinated.

UW is preparing to ease some COVID-19 requirements but maintain others this summer as it transitions to a traditional fall 2021 semester. The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T), The Wyoming Tribune Eagle, Laramie Live and Wyoming News Now published UW’s release noting that masks will no longer be required outdoors on campus early next month. Employees who are fully vaccinated will be allowed to travel with no requirement for COVID-19 testing.

Proactive noted that UW’s School of Energy Resources is using Clean Coal Technologies’ latest technological advances in a facility in Campbell County. The company is developing the world’s first commercially viable and scalable coal dehydration technology that creates stable, dust-free coal.

UW Professor Susan Aronstein and Associate Professor Kent Drummond will discuss the life and deeds of author L. Frank Baum during “American Oz.” Laramie Live and Oil City News published UW’s release on the PBS “American Experience” program airing today (Monday).

The Laramie Boomerang featured UW President Ed Seidel and his continued embracing and promoting of diversity, equity and inclusion on campus to help curtail racism.

New research led by UW scientists indicates that the timing of mule deer births does not always match exactly with spring green-up, according to The CS-T. The Powell Tribune and goHUNT published UW’s media release.

Laramie Live published UW’s release announcing that Scott Thomas, most recently the dean of the University of Vermont’s College of Education and Social Services, will be UW’s first John P. “Jack” Ellbogen Dean of the College of Education. The appointment is effective July 1.

SweetwaterNOW noted that UW’s online master’s degree program in educational leadership was named “Best in the West” for 2021 by Intelligent.com in its ranking of the “Top 50 Master’s in Educational Leadership Degree Programs.” The top programs are affordable, respected and flexible, according to the educational website.

UW atmospheric science Assistant Professor Jeff French discussed cloud seeding on BYU Radio’s “Top of Mind” program.

UW graduate Aura Newlin, a Northwest College instructor, received the Shepard Symposium Community Member Award for dedicating her life to the remembrance of what happened to her great-grandparents who were interned at the Heart Mountain Relocation Camp during World War II, Wyoming Public Radio reported. The Powell Tribune published a similar article.

The CS-T quoted Ed Synakowski, UW’s vice president for research and economic development, about a Riverton Middle School student who won a statewide competition to name one of the world’s fastest supercomputers. Derecho will be operational by early 2022. Sheridan Media published UW’s release.

Research by UW College of Business Assistant Professor Shawn McClean and his colleagues shows positive daily experiences with their families generally help leaders in their efforts to be transformational in the workplace. Laramie Live published UW’s announcement.

KGAB Radio published UW’s release announcing that UW Professor Emeritus Myron Allen will give the Buchanan Lecture this Friday.

Two Sheridan natives were recently honored in the UW School of Pharmacy’s White Coat Ceremony. The Sheridan Press published UW’s release noting that the ceremony symbolizes passage into the initial stages of the pharmacy profession.

Oil City News noted that first lady Jennie Gordon and UW Extension are encouraging gardeners to “grow a little extra” this year to provide produce for their neighbors in need.
