What materials need to be sent to the department? - Top
All required documents should be uploaded to the online application system. Do not end any documents to the Department unless requested to do so.

How many graduate students are currently enrolled?

In our 2021-2022 academic year, we have 25 PhD students and 8 master's students.
 
Who receives assistantships?
- Top
All PhD students accepted into our programs are normally offered graduate assistantships. The assistantship for PhD students includes a stipend plus full tuition and fees and the full cost of student health insurance, for up to four years. Often times outstanding students admitted to the Master's program are partially or fully funded depending on available funds. Additional summer research assistantships may also be available to students, ranging from $1,000 - $4,000 per summer.
 
What are the total fees and tuition?

Click here for the total tuition and fees for the academic year. Graduate students, including international ones, pay tuition at the in-state rate if they are awarded an assistantship.


What is the completion time for a PhD or masters?

On average, it takes four to five years to complete your PhD and three to four semesters to complete a masters degree.

What is UW's ETS code?
- Top
The code for the GRE is 4855 to send to the University of Wyoming and 1801 to send it to the Economics department. 
 
Can the TOEFL be waived?
- Top
The University of Wyoming requires international graduate applicants provide proof of satisfactory English ability if a student’s native language is not English.  This can be done by providing official score reports from TOEFL or IELTS.  Exceptions to this policy are rare and require special permission from the Graduate Education. Please contact the department if you believe that you might qualify for an English Language waiver.

 
What are the minimum required test scores on the GRE?

  • 310 GRE (verbal + quantitative) -- for PhD applicants. Minimum of 153 on the Verbal section and 144 on the quantitative section.
  • 300 GRE (verbal + quantitative) -- for MS program applicants. Minimum of 150 on the Verbal section and 141 on the Quantitative section.
 

Can I apply for spring semester? - Top

We do not accept PhD applicants for the spring semester.  MS students are able to start in the spring under approval by the selection committee and graduate director.


What is the deadline for Fall admission?

January 31st.

 

What should I include in my statement of purpose? - Top

The statement of purpose (one to three pages) should describe why you are interested in pursuing a graduate degree in Economics; how your professional, academic, and personal experiences led you to pursue this path and how they have prepared you for success in this degree program; what you hope to do following the graduate program; what your research interests are; what/who faculty research is of particular interest to you; and why the University of Wyoming is a good fit for you. You do not need to describe a particular research topic as you would in a research proposal. Feel free to correspond over email with faculty whose work interests you, and then to include their names in your SOP.
