The Powell Research and Extension Center (PREC) is located one mile north of Powell along Highway 295 at an elevation of 4,374 feet. The area receives an average annual precipitation of just 6.67 inches, with May and June being the only months averaging more than one inch of rainfall.

PREC is staffed by a faculty researcher, research associate, farm manager, two assistant farm managers, and an office associate. Together, the team conducts research and provides educational services that support the agricultural communities of northwestern Wyoming, including Fremont, Hot Springs, Washakie, Big Horn, Park counties—and beyond.

Of the center’s 220 acres, 175 acres are irrigated cropland dedicated to applied agricultural research. Current research areas include agronomic weed management, irrigation strategies, cropping systems, high tunnel production, variety performance testing, transgenic crop response to herbicide applications, and alternative crop development. PREC also collaborates in numerous regional research and education initiatives throughout Wyoming and the surrounding region.
