Dr. Bledar BishaDr. Bledar Bisha, is an associate professor of food microbiology and head of the Department of Animal Science at the University of Wyoming. His expertise is on the control of zoonotic diseases that are considered foodborne. He received his veterinary degree from the Agricultural University of Tirana, Albania, in 1999, and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Food Science and Technology (Food Microbiology) from Iowa State University, Ames, IA, in 2004 and 2009, respectively. Dr. Bisha later carried out his postdoctoral training at Colorado State University, Ft. Collins, CO, before accepting an assistant professor position at the Department of Animal Science, University of Wyoming, in 2013. He was promoted to associate professor in 2019, has served as interim department head 2019-2021, and as department head since 2021. A major focus of his research has been on elucidating mechanisms by which antimicrobial resistant bacteria and genetic elements enter the food supply, emphasizing research on the role of environmental inputs on the emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance and linkages to food production. Other important research efforts have comprised the development of rapid diagnostics for microbial pathogens in food and the environment, enhancement of sample preparation techniques for rapid detection of microorganisms from different matrices, novel control methods for foodborne pathogens in food and processing environment, and application of single cell methods for the study of microorganisms. His research works have consistently been cited by peers and he has been successful in securing extramural funding to support his research endeavors. Dr. Bisha serves the profession as an editorial board member or ad hoc reviewer for a large number of scientific journals has recruited for his expertise to multiple grant panels nationally and internationally. At the University of Wyoming, he teaches coursework in food microbiology and safety at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
