Alex Diaz

Hello! My name is Alex Diaz, and I am a PhD candidate and North American archaeologist. My broad interests include pre-contact American archaeology, hunter-gatherer-fisher societies, and the relationships between past humans and their environments, particularly human-animal interactions. I received my undergraduate degree in Anthropology at the University of North Florida (2022) and my Master’s degree at Florida State University (2024). As an avid fisherman who has lived near water for most of my life, my research focuses on how past peoples used the wide range of resources provided by coastal and riverine environments. My current research focuses on elucidating the special relationships Iñupiat groups living along the Kobuk River in northwest Alaska have with their environments, using an ethnoarchaeological approach that combines the analysis of archaeological fish remains through Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) and ethnographic research on modern fishing practices.
