Visit Options

Our team of curators and educators specializes in making the world come alive through art and objects. We offer various options for university faculty and instructors from all academic disciplines to engage with our collection. A customized class session in the art museum is a great way to integrate active learning strategies, observation skills, and creative thinking into the student's educational experience. We are continuing to offer engagement options that accommodate virtual and in-person learning.

Important things to note:

In order to ensure a quality experience, please submit a class visit request form 2-3 weeks in advance.  We will do our best to honor other requests outside this time frame. Please fill out the art experience request even if you plan to do a self-guided visit!

Self-Guided Experience

Self-guided visits to the museum are an option for students and faculty whenever the Art Museum is open to the general public! Learn from accompanying text and featured audio tours by scanning QR codes in the galleries.

Guided experience in the galleries

Work with the Curator of Academic Engagement to build a class session that connects your course themes and learning objectives with art on view in our galleries. Students will engage with art through close looking and make connections between the art and their coursework.

Guided artmaking session

A guided art-making or design-thinking activity at the museum based on your course's learning outcomes. Space and supplies provided!

Guided collections visit

Work in partnership with the Curator of Academic Engagement and Collections Manager to build a class session that connects your course learning objectives and themes with art from the permanent collection not currently on view.

Guided virtual classroom visit

The Curator of Academic Engagement will visit the classroom virtually. Students will engage with high-resolution images of art through close looking and make connections between the art and their coursework. 

Guided virtual collections visit

Work in partnership with the Curator of Academic Engagement and Collections Manager to build a class session. The Curator of Academic Engagement and the Collections Manager will be present in the virtual classroom for this visit.

 

Closer Looking: A Strategy for Engaging with Works of Art

This video on the Art Museum's YouTube channel demonstrates one method of teaching with art objects and part of the inquiry model adopted at the museum (which is Observe, Question, Explore, Create and Reflect). We call this practice slow looking, deep looking, or sometimes close looking. It's great for all disciplines!
