Picasso: 25 Years of Edition Ceramics from the Edward and Ann Weston Collection

    April 2 - May 29, 2004

Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) has been recognized as one of the leading painters, sculptors and graphic artists of the 20th century. Picasso was long intrigued by ceramics. In 1946, he became acquainted with Georges and Suzanne Ramie who owned and operated the Madoura pottery studio in Vallauris, France. After seeing the works of the Madoura potters, he asked the Ramies to provide him with the opportunity to work with ceramics. They willingly agreed, and in exchange for the studio space, Picasso agreed to allow the Ramies to produce limited editions of his ceramics.

This exhibition includes plates, bowls, pitchers, vases, and plaques, plus posters from previous Picasso ceramics exhibitions and photographs of Picasso at work in the Madoura pottery workshop. Picasso created this selection of 65 ceramic works between 1947 and 1971, in collaboration with the Ramies and the artisans at their Madoura workshop.
