37th Annual Juried UW Student Exhibition

Celebrating its 37th year, the Annual Juried University of Wyoming Student Exhibition is always a highlight of the Art Museum’s programs. Open to any student enrolled at UW in the current academic year, the exhibition is selected by a juror from outside the state. This year’s juror is Sharon Kennedy, Curator of Civic and Cultural Engagement at the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska. She will be tasked with selecting artwork from a variety of media submitted by UW students, including graphic design, sculpture, small metals, and printmaking. 

Juror Statement:

In viewing over 250 works in the University of Wyoming Annual Student exhibition, I was struck by the diversity of objects and the multitude of references and intentions. Figurative painting seemed to dominate the show although abstract and representational printmaking and sculpture were also abundant. Submissions of innovative works using nontraditional art materials was a refreshing component and provided evidence of a teaching environment that encourages free expression. Printing and stitching on cloth, manipulation of small metals and the inclusion of found objects were just a few of the many creative techniques included. Clearly, there is also a strong graphic arts directive as seen in the creative design work presented. 

As juror, I selected those works that demonstrated the student’s ability to excel in their chosen media and technique. Equally important was the personal and creative approach to ideas and content. Finally, I considered work that embodied the unique ways in which student artists respond to their environment. I trust the selections reflect the breadth and richness of the visual arts at the University of Wyoming, Laramie.
