Ralston Crawford (American, 1906-1978) is typically grouped with the Precisionist artists, such as Charles Demuth and Charles Sheeler, in the art historical timeline. However, he was too young to be considered just as a Precisionist and the genre occupied less than ten years of career. By 1945 as the world changed, as did his artwork, and the artwork of those artists working during the same time period. Ralston Crawford: Contemporaries features artwork from the Art Museum collection that focuses the various art movements occurring at the same time Crawford began to develop his mature style, the thirty years following his break from his Precisionist style. Selections of Crawford’s contemporaries include artists working in Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Synthetic Cubism, and Minimalism.
