The Art Museum continues the successful teaching gallery model in in the Pat Guthrie Special Exhibitions Teaching Gallery. While working closely with faculty from History and Fine Arts for their specific courses, the gallery also includes a wall of artwork by and about African Americans that deal with race, culture and identity for faculty in departments such as American Studies, African American and Diaspora Studies, History, Literature, Art History, Global and Area Studies, and Gender and Women’s Studies to preparation for the exhibition Emancipating the Past: Kara Walker’s Tales of Slavery and Power (January 30-May 14, 2016) for inclusion in their spring courses.
The artwork is available to students throughout the semester for use during the museum’s public hours and divided into four sections, one wall for each course. While the gallery is designed to meet the needs of the academic community, it is also open to the public in order to demonstrate connections between the Art Museum and teaching across the curriculum, supporting UW’s academic mission.
