Collecting lies at the heart of the UW Art Museum’s activities, advancing its mission
to collect, exhibit and interpret art to inspire creativity and nurture lifelong learning
for the people of Wyoming. Acquisitions are made possible through gifts from generous
donors or purchases with endowment funds designated for collections.
When it comes to selecting artworks, art museums across the country are looking at
their collections and seeing a lack of diversity in the artists acquired over the
years. Aware of this tendency, the UW Art Museum has made a conscious effort to acquire
artworks by minority and underrepresented artists.
Most recently the UW Art Museum has added artworks by African American artist Kara Walker (b. 1969), Iranian artist Shirin Neshat (b. 1957), and Native American artist Julie Buffalohead (b. 1972). These, among other works recently added to the collection, are featured in New Acquisitions: The Art Museum Collection.
Funded in part by Pat Guthrie Special Exhibits Gallery Endowment.
