Jenene Nagy: While Navigating the Distance Around the Sun

Nagy’s work is a practice of repetition and devotion. Intricately folded paper, layers of graphite, or individually dotted grids provide a temporal experience for both artist and viewer. The subtleties entice the viewer to engage in what Nagy describes as “the simple act of looking, to acknowledge their place in time as they contemplate an accrual.” To behold this transformation of materials into ritualized objects is one way to exist while navigating the distance around the sun. The UW Art Museum exhibits 19 of Nagy’s works, ranging from her smaller grid series to expansive works of folded paper with graphite and silver, up to nearly 20 feet in length. This exhibition also features Nagy’s newest work untitled 5 (From stars) completed in 2023 and never shown before.

Through artist-led prompts and creative experiments, develop a personal symbol that honors and celebrates your identity. During this two-part workshop, participants will use lino-cutting techniques to create a personal flag.
