Department of Computer Science
Professor Emeritus Henry Bauer significantly contributed to the field of computer science, first as a professor, then as the head of the Department of Computer Science, and, beginning in 1985, more broadly as an active member of the Computer Science Accreditation Commission (CSAC), part of the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board (CSAB). When Bauer became chair of the CSAC in 2004, it had already become the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. In 2011, because of his dedication to the computing profession and computing education, Bauer was named both an ABET and a CSAB Fellow. He continued to serve ABET on its Global Council and as a training facilitator.
While his computer science knowledge earned Bauer the admiration of his peers, his dedication to students made Bauer one of the most respected professors at UW. He received awards for exceptional teaching, including the Amoco Foundation Good Teaching award, the UW Student Equal Opportunity award, the John P. Ellbogen Meritorious Classroom Teaching award, as well as College of Arts and Sciences awards for academic advising and teaching. Bauer served the College of Arts and Sciences as an associate dean for nine years, during which time colleagues campus-wide came to appreciate his thoroughness and calmness.
