Curriculm
Family Medicine
Family Medicine is taught throughout the three-year program, both in the Family Medicine Center and during the eight months of Family Medicine rotations in the hospital. During the In-Patient Family Medicine rotation, a team of residents provides care for the patients on our hospital service. During this time, residents also serve as consultants for patients hospitalized by other physicians. Supervision is provided by the faculty.
Adult Medicine
During the three years of training, residents must complete eight months of in-patient Family Medicine and four and a half months of elective rotations. Educational experiences take place at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, the Veteran's Administration Medical Center, and various local physicians' offices. The cases encountered range from general medical issues to critical care scenarios. Residents also have the chance to collaborate with subspecialists in areas such as rheumatology, pulmonology, neurology, nephrology, hematology/oncology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, cardiology, and allergy/immunology.
OB/GYN Care
Residents have five required months of obstetrical experience under the supervision of the program faculty and community physicians. Residents will gain experience in labor management and delivery including vacuum extraction, forceps and operative obstetrics. During this time, residents will also participate in gynecologic surgeries. Residents who desire advanced training have the opportunity to gain additional experience in high risk and operative obstetrics. All residents will manage prenatal patients in the Family Medicine Center and follow them through delivery and postpartum care. During this time, residents have the opportunity to learn colposcopy, LEEP, endometrial biopsy and IUD insertion.
Care of Infants, Children & Adolescents
Residents have four months of required pediatric experience. First-year residents spend one month in Denver, Colo., doing in-patient pediatrics. Second-year residents return to Denver for one month of neonatology/pediatric emergency room experience. Two months of additional pediatric experience occurs, one month of out-patient pediatrician in the second year and one month in the third year, with local physicians. Additional experience in neonatology occurs during the required obstetrical rotations.
Care of the Surgical Patient
Residents have two required months of general surgery plus additional rotations in sports medicine and orthopedics. All residents will become proficient in managing pre- and post-operative patients along with developing strong surgical assist skills.
Sports Medicine/Musculoskeletal
This rotation is designed to give you the skills for providing musculoskeletal care in a rural setting. Working in a rural community may involve care, from Little League players through the master's level players. The Sports Medicine rotation is designed to give you "hands-on" skills and experience to use in your practice. Residents rotate through a sports medicine clinic staffed by primary care sports medicine doctors. Physical therapists are on site and actively involved in teaching. Residents may participate in side-line coverage at local high school events, local rodeos and Tier 2 Junior Hockey games.
