Oral Communication Center

Empowering UW Students to Excel in Public Speaking

The Oral Communication Center (OCC) is one of UW's invaluable resources dedicated to supporting student success. We help students prepare for and build confidence in public speaking, whether it's for a group presentation, a thesis proposal or anything in between. Our goal is to equip students with the skills to communicate effectively in any setting. With personalized coaching, practice sessions and workshops, we ensure that every student has the tools to succeed and deliver their message with clarity and confidence.

Resources for Public Speaking Anxiety

OCC understands that public speaking can lead to anxiety in many students. We are here to provide support and resources to navigate and mitigate that anxiety. Students can take a Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA) exam to help determine if they qualify for and could benefit from a special Public Speaking class offering that focuses specifically on overcoming speech anxiety.

Additionally, OCC helps students manage anxiety by:

  • Helping students feel properly prepared for an upcoming speech.
  • Offering in-person or online practice sessions along self-guided practice techniques.
  • Creating a plan to manage anxiety during a speech.
