Course in College Teaching (GRAD 5910: Teaching Methodologies & Application)

Expertise in content is essential, but if one is interested in entering the academic world, the ability to communicate that content and make it meaningful to students is equally important. The ECTL and the Office of Academic Affairs offers this three credit level S/U course to graduate students who want to broaden their skills and knowledge in the area of teaching in higher education.

This course provides opportunities to develop skills and knowledge to:

  • Design learning materials in one's discipline
  • Create a rich, interactive, and productive classroom
  • Successfully assess student learning
  • Develop an effective personal teaching philosophy
  • Reflect on teaching and learning experiences

Janel Seeley, Instructor

The course is taught by Dr. Janel Seeley, Director of the Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning. Janel has a background in educational psychology and over 20 years of teaching experience to share. She intends to create a dialog driven learning community where a wide variety of teaching methodologies, pedagogies and evidence-based practices will be explored in an immersive, learn-by-doing, type setting.
