Carnegie Community Engagement Classification

In 2024, UW received the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement. This is a first-time achievement for the institution and places UW as one of only 368 institutions across the nation to receive the designation.

Receipt of the Carnegie community engagement classification is both an acknowledgement of the institution's extensive efforts to date and a call to action for UW to further refine and expand its approach to community engagement.

The Office of Community Engagement provides leadership towards UW's increased commitment to partnership with Wyoming communities in addressing complex challenges facing our state.

What is the Definition of Community Engagement?

The University of Wyoming has adopted the Carnegie definition of community engagement:

Community engagement describes collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.

The purpose of community engagement is the partnership of college and university knowledge and resources with those of the public and private sectors to enrich scholarship, research, and creative activity; enhance curriculum, teaching, and learning; prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues; and contribute to the public good.

UW also values other types of connections between our institution and our state communities, including outreach and service.
