Thanks to work from CGS and campus faculty and staff, Wyoming now has its own Fulbright chapter.

The Center for Global Studies (CGS) ran their second successful annual Fulbright Faculty Breakfast this past Tuesday, August 27. In partnership with the Fulbright Association Wyoming Chapter, and Chapter President Dilnoza Khasilova, CGS hosted past, current, and future Fulbright Scholars.

Last year’s networking event supported six successful applications for scholars and teachers:

Amy Roberts, associate professor in the School of Teacher Education, was selected for the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) grant. This past summer, she led an immersion program for eleven program participants to study Spanish language and culture in Monteverde, Costa Rica.

Drew Bennett, professor of practice for the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar to conduct natural capital investment research in Canberra, Australia.

Lydiah Nganga, professor in elementary and early childhood education in the College of Education, has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar to pursue research on cross-cultural college educator perspectives on education for democracy and citizenship in Nairobi, Kenya.

Saman Aryana, professor and head of the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar to research and collaborate on energy transition at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.

Erin Phillips, researcher in the School of Energy Resources, has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar to research energy challenges and sustainable resource management at NORCE Norwegian Research Center AS in Bergen, Norway.

Urszula Norton, professor of plant sciences in the College of Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources, has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar to study soil contamination in agricultural systems with Agnieszka Medynska-Juraszek at Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Poland.

Group listens to Amy Roberts discuss her Fulbright experience

This year, Drew Bennett, along with notable UW Fulbright alumni and supporters, such as Tom Dougherty, Amy Roberts, April French, and Steve Ropp, provided advice on communication, timing, and topic development. Past recipients that researched and taught from Ireland to Indonesia also shared their experiences and wisdom.

While key resources and personnel were highlighted, the main draw for participants was the time and space for networking. Current applicants are interested in a myriad of programs across the globe, and CGS was able to facilitate access to experts experienced in a variety of programs. Participants also had the opportunity to meet UW's two new Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTAs), visiting from Germany and Libya.

We expect another excellent batch of Fulbright applications this year. Applications are due October 8, 2024, at 5:00 pm ET. Please contact CGS at cgs@uwyo.edu or Dilnoza Khasilova at dkhasilo@uwyo.edu if you would like support and information on applying.
