The University of Wyoming Art Museum will host Malaysian artist Anne Samat for an artist talk Thursday, Aug. 25, and a community weaving workshop Friday, Aug. 26.

The events are in conjunction with Samat’s exhibition, “Anne Samat: Weavings of Love,” which features 11 sculptural representations of love. The exhibition is on view at the UW Art Museum through Saturday, Aug. 27.

Samat will give an artist talk Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. in the museum galleries as part of the Salvagio Art Talk Series. A reception will precede the talk at 5 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided. The reception and talk are free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.uwyo.edu/artmuseum.

The visiting artist will present a community weaving workshop Aug. 26 from 5-7 p.m. in the UW Art Museum’s Shelton Studio. The event is free and open to the public, but space is limited. Registration is required. For more information and to register, click here.

Samat creates colorful totemic wall sculptures using everyday materials. Her work is deeply informed by Malaysian culture, with a contemporary sensibility for color, texture and form. Samat combines traditional Pua Kumbu weaving -- an art form she studied formally at the Mara Institute of Technology in Malaysia -- with the familiar accoutrements of modern life such as rakes and silverware. Her works are a material union of fiber and metal, a metaphoric union of tradition and modernity.

For more information, call Will Bowling, public programs coordinator at the UW Art Museum, at (307) 766-3496 or email wbowling@uwyo.edu.

The UW Art Museum shares in the transformative power of art through exhibiting, preserving and interpreting visual culture from around the world. As an integral part of UW, the museum fosters a deeper connection with humanity and creativity that envisions new futures by engaging academic, local, state, national and global communities.

The museum is located at 2111 E. Willett Drive in Laramie. Hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday hours are extended to 7 p.m. Admission is free.
