A reception and discussion to recognize Naoma Tate for her loan of Western paintings for the current exhibition, “Painted for Illustration: Paintings and Published Western Art from the Collection of Naoma Tate,” will be Thursday, Feb. 27, in the University of Wyoming American Heritage Center’s exhibition hall.
The exhibition features well-known Western artists from the 20th century, such as Harvey Dunn, Frank McCarthy, Frank Tenny Johnson, Oliver Kemp and William Dunton. The reception will begin at 4:30 p.m. with refreshments, followed by a presentation at 4:45 p.m.
The reception will be held in the Wyoming Stockgrowers Room in the AHC’s exhibition hall on the main floor. The exhibition is next door in the Toppan Library and can be viewed both before and during the reception.
During the reception, Mary Beth Brown, the AHC’s Toppan Librarian, will speak on “How Artists Make Money: From Paintings to Books to Movies.” The talk will look at how the exhibition reveals the connections and influences between artists and authors. It will explore how artists create paintings to illustrate stories published in books and magazines, and how their work sometimes goes on to impact other media such as film.
AHC Director Paul Flesher will talk about Dunn and the interplay between his career as an artist and as an illustrator, and also the character of the exhibition’s painting by Dunn within the context of both sides of his career. Flesher’s talk is titled “The Work of Harvey Dunn: From the World to South Dakota.” While he is often seen as a quintessential South Dakota artist, the talk will describe his broader vision of the world.
