UW-Led Wyoming Dementia Together Caregiver Tip Program Offered March 12

“Dignity in Dementia Care and Aging Etiquette” is the topic of a Wyoming Dementia Together (WDT) program Wednesday, March 12.

WDT is a statewide, nonprofit caregiver network operating through the University of Wyoming’s Wyoming Center on Aging (WyCOA). WDT meets by Zoom call every other Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. The free programs feature guest speakers and allow time for interaction from those who attend online.

Caregivers of loved ones living with dementia know very well the awkward, uncomfortable situations that can arise, often in public. Regardless, the dignity of the loved one is always deserved, according to Catherine Carrico, a UW clinical assistant professor of psychology and associate director of WyCOA.

“Attendees will explore strategies to foster belonging and demonstrate respect for personal choices, beliefs and values,” Carrico says. “Caregivers, themselves, will have a chance to share their challenges and also provide ideas and support to others caring for loved ones with dementia.”

WDT includes dementia care professionals, licensed clinical social workers, occupational therapists and caregivers themselves. WDT began meeting in fall 2020 and has been offering online programming help.

Future WDT programs offered will feature “Dementia: The Importance of Early Diagnosis,” March 26; “Dementia Research Update: Medical and Non-Medical Treatment Interventions,” April 9; “Dementia Continuum of Care: Our Options,” April 23; “Care Support and Circle of Care: Building Your Team,” May 7; “Long-Distance Caring: Including Family Members in Your Circle of Care,” May 21; “Navigating Nutrition and Mealtime,” June 4; and “Caregiver Bootcamp: The Basics,” June 18.
