The annual event, hosted by the UW Top-Tier Science Initiative in partnership with the Office of the President, is scheduled 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at the College of Health Sciences, located in the Health Sciences Building Complex.

Each year, the event celebrates a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) unit on campus. This year, the carnival will feature the College of Health Sciences’ schools and programs as well as local entities involved in health care.

The STEM Carnival is open to the public and is expected to serve over 1,500 K-12 students from schools in Albany, Carbon, Converse, Goshen, Laramie, Natrona and Sublette counties; statewide students at Wyoming Connections Academy and Wyoming Virtual Academy; and a variety of home-schooled students.

“The UW STEM Carnival looks to bring together the amazing STEM programs, facilities and departments on campus to team up and excite young people in Wyoming,” says Karagh Brummond, co-director of the Science Initiative Roadshow and Community Engagement Program, and co-organizer of the STEM Carnival. “The chance to help inspire Wyoming students in STEM with a unifying event speaks to the mission and values of UW. Erin Klauk and I are grateful to all of those helping to make this year’s STEM Carnival successful.”

Klauk is an assistant lecturer in the Science Institute and co-organizer of the STEM Carnival.

Science departments and programs will offer STEM tables at the event, where hands-on activities and demonstrations will be available for carnival participants. More than 50 STEM tables will be set up inside and outside the Health Sciences Building. The college’s featured units also will run 10 workshops for attendees.

For a schedule and description of the workshops, go to www.uwyo.edu/science-initiative/stem-carnival.html.

In organizing this large-scale inreach event, the Science Initiative hopes to increase awareness of the science research on campus, connect universities with statewide partners and increase campus connections.

The event will be catered by the UW Food Science Club, which will offer free hot dog meals for attendees while supplies last. A free meal ticket is required.
